Don't waste my time.

And yet, that power does not simply vanish. While the psychic no longer has conscious and effective control of their more esoteric powers, they still exist, and it builds up before gradually dissipating into the area around them, a constant "bleed" of power that does nothing to harm the psychic's combat ability, but allows them to function without going mad from built-up power. However, there are certain side effects to the buildup and bleed-out, and a theory regarding psychic control... First, the side effects. Put simply, Psychic-types unconsciously influence the world around them. While it is far beyond their control and never anywhere near strong enough to be weaponized, anyone often in the presence of a Psychic-type, especially a stronger one, will gradually begin to notice small, harmless changes; they may have urges to sneeze without actually needing to sneeze, or feel a slight itch in their tail when they don't have one, or feel the softest brush of another mind, alien and incomprehensible and yet somehow familiar and welcome. While it's never strong or obvious enough to necessarily point directly to the psychic, and most people don't know enough about Psychic-types on and their issues om Althea, nor spend enough time around them to actually begin to understand the effect, it does exist, and most trainers with Psychic-types learn about it at a reasonably quick rate. The effects happen according to no obvious rhyme or reason, but any flashes of emotion or momentary empathic connection tends to reflect the psychic's own mentality; happiness, sadness, even brief, fleeting flashes of pain mid-battle. They can vary from emotions to sensations to things that seem to have no rhyme nor reason, as tiny pulses of psychic power touch on random neurons and cause random effects. Some psychics don't care, others may not even know, but some make conscious effort to control their impulses and powers, attempting to emulate even the slightest fraction of the control they would otherwise have. In theory, this alone could very well qualify Althea as the premiere Psychic-type training ground; if a psychic could master their powers even under the massive strain and lack of control imposed on them by the city's field, they would, in theory, have absolutely flawless control if they ever escaped the island and returned to normal civilization - to be able to leverage even minimal control in Althea would lend itself to superb mastery anywhere else, and the effects would, again in theory, only grow exponentially as more mastery is reached. Given that no one has come anywhere close to even minimal master on Althea, the theory has not yet been tested - but it will likely be at some time. |
