(Selia) Marlene's Journey

Marlene moved silently among the grass using it as shelter from unwanted eyes. He had been attacked by a duo of hungry Growlithe a couple of days prior and now preferred to pass undetected if he could help it. Not that many predators would dare to attack him: Nidoran’s Poison was known among Pokemon and only idiots would dare to attack one of his kinds. Unless they were resistant to poison, that is, like Ekans and Seviper, who in fact were one of the few dangers his species feared. The two Growlithe had been only pups, in fact, thus too stupid to know he wasn’t something safe to eat. He had outrun them with a great effort, though, and wasn’t eager to repeat the experience.

He stopped and raised a bit on his hind legs, his ears emerging from the green surface, the black tips clear in sight. They twitched as the Pokemon tried to catch any sound that could reveal someone else’s presence and then, as he was satisfied with the result, he straightened more so to be able to see above the tall grass.

Nothing in sight.

He kept advancing, carefully. That way of moving had the only problem Marlene’s visual was very narrow, and he had to give a glance up there now and then to orient himself. However, it was good to not be seen by big predators, or at least to spot them from far away, before they saw him. The same couldn’t be done with pokemon around his size, but he believed he could handle those ones, especially since they wouldn’t be so dangerous.

Cautiously you walk through the tall grass. Using the grass for cover being the best you can do, isn't always the best idea. Trainers know that to find Pokemon, they need to explore tall grass. Lucky for you, you are on a route. If this was a city you would have been spotted a long time ago. Rustling grass would kind of give you away easily.

The wandering in the maze of grass brought you to a small area that was cleared out. In the center on this area sat a lone human girl, petting her pet Nidoran. This Nidoran was a different color than you. She was a soft bluish color and had a very tiny horn. Obviously it was a female of your species, but this one was human owned. The female's ears perked up when you came close to their camp. She, having the same radar senses as you do, turned to face the direction you were in.

The girl that was petting her Nidoran got up and quickly backed away. She looked to be afraid of what could be in the grass, not knowing it was just you of course. "W-w-who's there? Come out here or I'll have Jasmine attack." The girl was terrified of you; at least she was terrified of what you could be." The girl was scared enough to attack blindly, but it was obvious that she was no trainer. She didn't have the trainer composure, or that feeling that she was a trainer. You could go out and meet her face to face, or you could avoid her altogether. She sure doesn't look like she could battle, or give proper commands. Though what would a girl like this be doing outside by herself if she wasn't a trainer? You can find out or ignore.

[I know older posts can't be modified, the one above looks edited due to a button-pressing mistake. I just wanted to quite the thing <.<]

Marlene preceded slowly trough the greenery until he felt the grass give him less resistance and stopped. He poked lightly with his nose and detected that there had to be some clear space in front of him. Cautiously, he peered over the grass to have a clear look.

Crap!

The female Nidoran (he had lived with far too much of them to not be able to recognize one when saw her) had seen him, he was pretty sure of it, but the worst was than a girl was with her. He felt a cold shiver run down his spine as he quickly ducked in hope to avoid at the human’s eyes, but he was sure he had caused a lot of noise in doing so, a thing that could have given away his position. Soon after, the girl’s voice echoed around him. It was fearful and shaky, far different from the shrill, confident cry of his previous owner. She had been a stuck up child, always accompanied by a Spearow, the Pokemon that had aided her in his capture.

In a normal situation, the human would have sent the Nidoran to fight him upon sight, or silently tried to ambush him, but in this one, the trainer sounded pretty scared. Besides, Marlene was enough acquainted with human language to understand her treat and deemed better to not provoke her. He didn’t need any wound. At the very most, he was going to get out, have a look at the situation and then dash away. He doubted that such a spineless girl would follow him.

Deciding to figure out what exactly is going on, you step out of the grass to see what's going on. After all, the girl doesn't seem like much of a threat with her timid attitude. Surely she won't be causing you much trouble. Her female Nidoran probably can't even attack properly, being apparently just an untrained pet.

Seeing you, the girl's eyes widen, and she takes a further step backwards. "D-don't... don't hurt me, please..." She whimpers, turning to look at her pokemon, who is perfectly calm as she sits on the ground where she has been placed. "Jasmine, please, defend me if you- if you know how or anything." She says quietly to the creature. However, the female Nidoran's only response is to roll her eyes, and continue watching you. It seems as if the other pokemon is at least a bit more intelligent than her owner. Or perhaps it is just laziness or random attitude that causes her to act this way- You can't be quite sure.

Meanwhile, despite her fear, the girl manages to look at a watch on her wrist, a cheap plastic one colored pink and glittery. Her eyes widen, and she speaks quietly to her pokemon, even more concerned. "M-mommy and D-daddy, should've been back... back here... half an hour ago..." She comments, her voice barely above a whisper. Could this girl perhaps be lost? It makes sense as to why she'd be out here alone, although most parents would be responsible enough not to leave their child with only a lone, probably low-level pet for protection. Either way, you might as well just run off now- The girl doesn't seem like a threatening presence, nobody for you to take too much interest in.

Marlene snorted back at the Nidoran, showing he wasn’t pleased by her unfriendly attitude. He had grown with enough sisters and random females to have lost the sense of shyness of a young male in front of the opposite gender. Thus, now he looked at the other rabbit Pokemon with the exact same look of annoyance she had, though it was directed at him… probably.

“What? Are you waiting for me to ask ‘what’s happened and go hero?” he asked sarcastically. He was nice, usually, but that wordless look unnerved him quite a bit: what she expected, some sort of gallant offer of help? A reckless attack? Him falling at her feet? Not to mention female kids as the one now whimpering in front of him alarmed him as well. She couldn’t help to wonder how much she liked to play dress-up with Jasmine.

However, that situation made him also hesitant to go away. Though his experience with humans wasn’t very good, it hadn’t been bad in the sense of ‘beaten senseless by an horrible trainer’. On the contrary, thus now he couldn’t exactly walk away and leave the kid on her own. It could have been dangerous for her and that house-pet of hers. Pet that, he couldn0’t forget, was of his kin as well.

Anyway, he didn’t want to let the girl grow some sort of ‘affection’ toward him and think she could bring him home. Therefore, he kept his distance as he asked the Nidoran what was going on.

“Shouldn’t you bring her back home?”

The Nidoran immediately snarls back at you, eyes narrowing. However, she remains silent, and looks over to her trainer. The girl doesn't even notice, still wide-eyed and staring at you. You can even see her trembling in fear a bit, despite the fact that you aren't exactly a threatening presence at your current level. Wimp. She bends down, petting Jasmine, slowly, and whispers something to her. The female of your species nods, but then trots off to look at you, finally speaking.

"Pfft, my owner's telling me to keep you from "eating" her. She's afraid of almost everything, honestly. I'd take her home, sure, but it's fun to watch her squeal like this. Glad to see you aren't going to be aggressive or anything- She doesn't realize that I'd taught myself to battle before she captured me, and tends to freak out and scream when anything seems like it'll attack." Jasmine sighs, explaining what's going on.

"Eek, don't talk to the enemy! Have even you turned against me, Jasmine!" The girl sobs, overreacting. You can here her crying loudly, and Jasmine rolls her eyes before walking over to her owner. The Nidoran tries to seem comforting, friendly, but you can clearly tell its all an act, from the look in the fellow pokemon's face of vague irritation. Meanwhile, the girl continues talking to the pokemon.

"Okay, Jasmine... Stay away from that wild beast! Save me!" She whimpers pathetically, still obviously terrified of you. You might as well go walk away now, she's beyond help, it seems- Or you could try talking to Jasmine a bit, try to get her to take the girl home. Is it worth risking wasting your time? Or not?

Marlene’s ears twitched brusquely at the girl’s sharp wailing. She was really a crybaby, but he didn’t like the way the other Pokémon was treating her. Even with his trainer, who had been a real psychological torture, he didn’t behave like that. He could conceive not loving and not following the person you had had the bad luck to end with, but that was a sort of cruelty, the kind of a spoiled little Pokémon who had a full stomach, nothing to think about and yet deemed herself superior. She was no better of that crying little girl, or of her human parents who didn’t worry about her.

He shook his head and spoke to her, his courtesy gone now that he had lost the respect toward such a narrow-minded creature. To find such a shameful being of his kin… even his father would have refused a companion like her for him.

“If that’s the way you have fun, you are really a little brat. If you don’t like your life with her, why don’t you leave, instead of playing these stupid games only to feel important? Because they feed you? You are behaving like a stupid and selfish human.”

With that, he jumped once more toward the grass, leaving without getting any closer to the two beings in the clearing. There was no need to scare the little girl more, since she didn’t understood by herself there was no reason to be scared in the first place.

“It’s because I’m loved and cared for!” Marlene could hear the fellow Nidoran shout in protest after him as he made his way back into the grass. The girl, meanwhile, having not taken any pokemon language courses after he had turned his back, failed to interpret this correctly.

“Yay, Jasmine!” she shouted, with relief and happiness. “You scared him off! I knew I could count on you!”

The conversation continued afterwards, but by that time, Marlene had made enough progress into the grass that the softer voice that followed was not exactly intelligible to his ears, well tuned as they may have been. Didn’t matter anyways, seeing as he was done with the both of them. And so back through the grass he went, but before long, a new rustling in the grass could be heard, further away from the girl and her Nidoran, and from the looks of it, it was not one, but several critters. And they weren’t saying anything as they approached.

Was it more worthless pokemon, or perhaps something more sinister on the move? Either answer was debatable, as soon enough, a Sentret popped its head through the grass, stared face to face with Malene, and then popped itself up and shouted in a panicked yell. Soon enough, two additional Sentret yells could be heard from either side, before all three came down and began to scamper in the opposite direction.

Now what was that all about?

The Nidoran tensed, at the cries, slightly alarmed at first, as he didn’t understand immediately they had been scared by him. After all, why a Pokémon should be afraid of him? He wasn’t a carnivore or a trouble-maker and he didn’t consider his look intimidating, having lived with Pokémon bigger and scarier than him, like his father and mother.

It was true, however that though Sentret were the best sentinels of the forest; they also tended to over-react toward most of the situations. Because of this, many of the weaker Pokémon relied heavily on their presence to spot dangers before dangers spotted them, since they had more to lose. Those who had less to fear, instead, preferred to check for themselves if the situation was worth worrying or not, even if it was convenient to have someone that guarded their back in such an attentive way.

Marlene belonged to the second category, his type and ‘fame’ a deterrent for most of the predators. However, the memory of the two Growlithe puppies warned him about being to confident about himself. Besides, if the enemy was a snake, he would have had to fight or die, because the mostly were immune to his poison, like he was immune to theirs.

Thus, he deemed better to find an higher place from which to observe his surroundings, so to spot what had scared the Sentret. He hadn’t a tail to use as pedestal, so he had to fins something else, like a big rock, a fallen truck, something like that. He followed the Sentret that had just escaped, hoping that he would guide him to such a place. They usually ran from the close danger to find a secure spot from where observe the outcome of things safely. However, he didn’t knew that with his actions he was probably scaring the creature even more, because it was he the danger, even if he wasn’t aware of it….

As Marlene chased, er, followed, the Sentret, he could occasionally hear one of them stand up on their tail again and give a quick follow up yell before continuing on. Unless there was something behind him, it was decently the Nidoran that was scaring them. But what they were being scared for, if they were being scared for anything, would soon become visible as he came to a patch where the long grass was somewhat scattered, making it possible to see around him without plants standing in his way. Or rather, normal grass, as grass pokemon is what he found.

“There it is! There it is!”

The three Sentret were hopping, on their tails, in unison, pointing at Marlene. Next to them, on the ground, were a Tangela and an Oddish, and behind them, what must have been at least a dozen Budew.

“Aw, calm down. He’s not so scary.” Said the Oddish.
“I don’t know, he looks kind of scary to me.” Responded the Tangela.
“Not scary.”
“Scary.”
“Not scary.”
“Is scary.”
“Fine, I’ll ask him.”

The Oddish looks directly at Marlene.

“Hey, you. Are you scary?”

Marlene abruptly stopped as he didn’t feel anymore the protective caress of the tall grass round him. The young Nidoran had been too focused on the Sentret and wasn’t prepared to the sudden change of his surroundings. He looked around wildly for a moment, his senses adjusting to the new situation, and almost jumped out of his a second time and the Sentret shrill cries echoed around him. His sensitive ears were slightly offended by that turmoil and he slightly glared at the group.

They weren’t alone though, as those who at first had looked plants to him, since he was distracted by the Sentret, moved toward him. He recognized the Oddish: back home there were a young couple of those Pokémon that stopped to play with them from time to time. They were immune to poison as much as other Nidoran were, and had a bold and friendly attitude that let them approach other kin of Pokémon without many thoughts. He remembered they had stopped coming after one of them was killed for cheerfully approaching an hungry Carnivine…

As for the other creature, a ball of intertwined grass strands, he hadn’t the faintest idea of what he was. He wanted to approach it to sniff it, but as he considered the thought they started debating over his… scariness? His ears twitched as he sat back in puzzlement and was taken aback by their question.

“I dunno, ehr… it’s a thing that you should know… I can’t scare myself, you see?” It was the only thing he could say in response. And actually: was he scary? He didn’t think so, but maybe he was mistaken?

“I’m going to take that as a ‘no’.” said the Oddish. “So you three.” he said, turning to the three Sentret, who while having become quieter, were not quite calmed down, still in a toned-down panic mode. “Stop panicking already.”

The Sentret did so, one at a time, and came down to their feet, making things a lot quieter.

“I’m still not convinced.” Said the Tangela.
“Just drop it already!” his friend replied. “I can understand why you might think he was scary, but even if he was, he seems friendly enough. Speaking of which...” Finally getting back to Marlene. “Seeing how you seem friendly enough an all, where are my manners. My name is Tobba, and this is my friend Olletsoc.” he said, indicating to the large mass of vines next to him. He then turned to indicate to the three Sentret. “And those three panic monkies go by the names of Moe, Harpo, and Kenny.”

For a moment, he turned as though he was going to introduce the Budew as well, but then turned around and kind of gave whatever passed for an Oddish shrug.

“The Budew, well, I’ll admit that even I haven’t learned all their names yet. I’m working on it, though.”

Leaving a pause to let the Nidoran absorb all the information, he then finished off with another question.

“So how ‘bouts you? What’s your name?”

Marlene looked at the group with curiosity and slight amusement. They made quite a strange team, he mused and they were so many… They kind of reminded him of his family up in the mountain, though they would have surely run away at the sight of stranger. More likely his father would have beaten whoever it was to a pulp, and then ask why it was disturbing his family.

Those guys could do it as well, if they wished to: they were so many! Instead they were scared out of their minds by him… apart the Oddish, who looked a bit like the chief of the community. He probably was, and Marlene had the feeling the grass type wasn’t going to escape should he try to do something bad to his companion. After a few seconds, he decided he liked the blue and green Pokémon… Tobba. He had already troubles in remembering all those names, especially the one of the ball of wines; as for the Sentret, the main problem was to assign the right name to each of them…

“I’m Marlene, like the apples.” He supplied, hoping they would know the connection. He, in all honesty, didn’t. His former owner had named him like that: ‘like the apples’ had been practically her motto and she repeated it to every guest when she showed her ‘lovely rabbit’ to them. In the very least, the Nidoran thought his new acquaintances would like to know he was named after a fruit, since they were grass types.

He rose on his hind legs and scrubbed his muzzle with the forepaws, trying to remove all the water and dirt that had gathered there during the journey in the tall grass. There was no danger around, so he could very well relax and do some toiletry, right?

“So, ehr, do you live here from a long time?” he asked.

The mention of apples didn’t seem to ring a bell with either of the two, as they just turned to look at one another as if either knew what the other one was talking about, and shrugged as neither one had anything to comment on it. Guess neither of them knew what ‘like the apples’ meant either.

But the question of where they lived, however, brought a much different response.

“Fire! Fire! Fire!”

Tobba turned around and gave the Sentret a look, which quickly made them quiet down and come back down off their tails, which they had jumped up on again.

“We actually don’t live here.” He said as he turned back to face Marlene.
“Yeah, we’re…what do you call it? Moving? Migrating? Fleeing?” Olletsoc said.
“Something like that. We’re currently trying to find a new home. That’s what those three were scouting ahead for – make sure there was no danger ahead.”
“We used to live at a watering hole at the inner edge of the forest, but it was taken over by a bunch of stronger pokemon. Including a few fire pokemon. Since the watering hole was mostly home to grass types like us, we were left unable to do anything.”
“There were a few who did try to put up a fight. A couple friends of mine, a pair of Roselia, were among them. Needless to say, they didn’t last long. These Budew are simply their young, who I agreed to help get to a new source of water.”
“We heard there was on in that direction, so...” The Tangela said, pointing behind Marlene, in the direction he had come from.

The small rabbit’s ears flattened a bit against his head. “Oh, I’m very sorry to hear that.”

Marlene hadn’t an idea of what it could mean losing his home and family, as he had left them willingly and was sure to retrieve them should he feel the need to go back. The Pokémon in front of him weren’t so lucky, and some of them were so young… He wondered if it was possible to go back where they come from and help them try to regain their territory, but he doubted they were strong enough for it if they had escaped in the first place. Marlene himself wasn’t surely in the conditions to face strong opponents either.

“Well, there’s an human not far in that direction, but she’s no danger and you’ll hear her way before, I can assure you, so don’t make yourself noticeable and she won’t be a problem…” he paused unsure of what to say. It didn’t look right, to leave them on their own: they were so many, and surely had an hard time to keep a low profile. Plus, they were very vulnerable, as the only able to really fight were the Tobba and the ball of vines. Both of them were going to probably succumb to the first strong bird of fire Pokémon that crossed their path and then, the others would be defenseless.

In the end, the Nidoran made up his mind “Ehr… Listen, I can accompany you. I can be of help against fire Pokémon and Birds and not many are going to risk poisoning by hitting my body. And it’ll be easier to look after these kinds in three rather than two when the Sentret are busy scouting.”
