magazine clippings from the Spurt, Pokémon celebrity magazine, dated one year ago- Quote:

Anyone over 25 who doesn’t follow the latest in Pokémon may not know his name, but Torby Ryonami is one of the hottest young coordinators in Tohea today. The boy has yet to make more than three television appearances in Tohea, but he has quickly taken the Contest scene by storm. Viewers have fallen for this baby faced kid’s stage appeal and charge, and the judges seemed to feel the same- he has already earned two ribbons, and hopes ride high that the boy will be one of the entries for the first annual Tohean Grand Festival.
Hailing from the Sinnoh Region’s Jubilife City, Torby brings along a ‘Super Contest’ influence to the Tohean scene. At only twelve years old, he is considered by RibbonWorld.com as the youngest coordinator of note, already stepping out from the throngs of ten years olds with limited experience- and limited talent. Torby is considered different, however- Raoul Contesta, Pokémon Contest Director, says “The boy brings a style of coordinating and battling that is a fresh breath of air into the coordinating world, and one that Tohea can certainly benefit from in its relatively new contest system.” He goes on to state his high hopes for the boy, expecting Torby to “if not just qualify for the Grand Festival, but be a serious competitor for” Tohea’s very first Contest Cup.
Spurt has followed Torby's wins and appearances- His first contest was an absolute success, trouncing the competition with his Chikorita. His second contest proved more difficult, his Eevee losing in the finals after a tough appeal round. In the latest Contest in Riverwood City, Torby proved victorious once more- this time, with his Mudkip. All three times, Torby was unable to be reached for an interview. While the public may not know Torby personally, however, one thing is certain- fans are waiting anxiously waiting for the boy’s next appearance, and, hopefully, an appearance in the Grand Festival.
Torby rolled his eyes, crumpling up the glossy piece of paper between his fingers, tossing the disappointing piece of journalism on the floor of his cabin. The boy had taken a break and decided to read up on the magazines in the room, compliments of cruise ships’ staff, and had been more than disappointed to see how little he was actually mentioned in any of them. A quarter page article in some underground magazine that wasn’t even published outside of that crappy Tohea island?- these people obviously did not know who the fuck he was! “I love how awesome I apparently am to those losers…” He said, stroking the Eevee on the bed next to him. The Pokémon gave a nod- it knew where its trainer was coming from. “Its like you three didn’t do anything at all…” Torby did not like being bullshitted… Tohean contest were just not providing the challenge he was looking for. There was really only one motivation for him entering contests and being a coordinator… Every since he was a little kid, Torby loved to pick on people and bully them- the alternative was usually letting them walk all over him. In the schoolyards, Torby was always the small kid unsuspecting bullies would go for, not knowing how badly the boy would kick their ass. He may have been small, but Torby was an excellent acrobat, and, while not a seasoned fighter like martial artists, getting kicked in the face by a flying boy still hurt. Torby always liked the idea of Pokémon battles, and he always liked the idea of looking cool and badass while at it. Pokémon contests actually encouraged him to do that kind of thing, and he actually didn’t get in trouble. Fact, he actually got rewarded... Tohea just wasn’t cutting it. If he wanted to make it big, he’d have to go somewhere not made of suck all of the sudden by a shift in government. Althea… seemed like a nice alternative… Trainer Personality:- Quote:

Torby is a kid that knows what he wants, and knows damn well how to go after it. He won’t stand by and let someone just get in his way- all opposition on the way to his goal will be run over and removed by any means necessary. Torby has a high opinion of himself, and since he’s the best, he’ll expect nothing but perfection from his Pokémon as well. He trains extensively- clumsiness is offensive to the senses, and any Pokémon he deems ugly can forget about being anything more than a punching bag. Torby has social grace, but it’s usually overshadowed by his extreme confidence and general rudeness to anyone he deems too stupid to associate with. It’s not rare for Torby to judge people right off the bat- if you’re annoying or look stupid, he’ll treat you as such. His love of the spotlight pushes him to trains himself alongside his Pokémon- in appeals; he showcases himself just as much. Easily annoyed by people treating Pokémon like props, Torby believes that the Pokémon are just as responsible as the coordinator. As a result, he may push his Pokémon so hard it may seem to be abusive, but its only fair- he pushes himself just as far.
