In a tiny part of the forest, a small area overcrowded with foliage and other foresty things, Palia laid on the ground on her stomach, cushioned by the ground coated in leaves. Her legs swung in the air back and forth as she doodled something on a piece of trash. Her pencil was a gnarled old stick, dipped in ink made from various types of berries from the surrounding area. It was afternoon apparently, the temperature was at it's height and the sun's rays tickled the forest floor in an array similar to how light shines through broken glass. Palia's sister, Karas, was sitting on a nearby tree branch, sulking something horrible. A very typical scene for the two. Palia often drew diagrams of nonsense on scratch paper, and Karas was often seen swinging or sitting; acting sad or depressed. They had no family, no parents, no friends, no aquaintances. All they had was each other and their pokémon. On occasion they'd be startled by the rustling of a bug crawling through the leaves, or an Aipom swinging through their clearing, but all in all it was a normal, boring day in the lives of Erinev twins. Karas had a lot on her mind. Her legs dangled limply over the branch she was sitting on. Her brows were furrowed and her lips were in a tight frown. She often thought about the subject, the one topic that always brought doom and gloom into her life. She was thinking about her parents. She often wondered about why they abandoned her and Palia. Why had they made her life a living hell? No matter, whining didn't really help anything. Besides, even if they did find them, the rage it would stir would be...interesting to say at the least. As she thought these melancholy thoughts she also took in the sounds of the forest. She could hear the chirping of exotic birds, the scrabble of other beasties on the forest floor. The trees were alive with the dripping of rain and occasionally a squeal rang out from prey being devoured. She was tired of this nonsense. She let herself fall of the branch, hitting the ground with a huff. She was standing next to Palia, who was intent on studying her latest drawing. Yup...a pretty boring day. |

I stretched my arms -- well, Acerbus's arms -- and yawned. Today hadn't been very exciting. The most interesting thing to happen so far is that we got into a misunderstanding with a Swablu, which mistook greyish cast of Acerbus's skin for dirt. Acerbus informs me that a cottony wing colliding with his nose is not a pleasant experience and that he would rather not repeat it. Anyway, we're on an adventure! Are you sure? Yes! We're exploring the forest! That's a very adventurous activity! Oh. Okay, then. Suddenly, I heard a thump, like something impacting the ground. It was very mysterious, so we decided to investigate it. Well, I decided to investigate it, but Acerbus was curious, too, so it sort of counts as "we". Who's that? Huh? Oh! Hey, there's people here! Cool! Let's scare them! No, wa"DUSKULL! DUSKULLLLLL!" I shouted as I burst out of Acerbus's chest and waved my arms spookily at the two little girls, while my single glowing eye rolled around like a marble in my skull. |

No, wa-- Too late. Averna had already vacated my body and was trying to scare the kids that we'd run into. I stumbled, not having expected to be thrown back into control so quickly, but caught myself and leaned against a nearby tree. I'd rather this not turn into a confrontation.... "Averna, please don't do that," I said softly, although not so softly that the two girls would be unable to hear me. "It's rude...." What will happen next, I wonder...? The reaction was almost instant. In a wush of trash, pencil, and leaves, Palia was on her back and scrambling backward on all fours. "Waaaaah!" she screamed, rather violently at that. At first, she wasn't even quite sure what she was staring at. After her mind cleared and her focus returned, she could see the Duskull glaring at her behind its mask. "Eww! Eww! Eww! A ghost!!!! A GHOOOOST!!!!" she was hysterical! Apparently, ghosts spooked the fuck out of her. Anyway, after that little outburst was over, she calmed down and took a look at the owner of the obnoxious little bag of bones. He was a tall man...err...maybe not tall, but he appeared to be anyway. It was probably because of his own ghostly appearance. He seemed to mimic his Duskull's skull like visage, with a face like that of death and a spindly body to match. She wasn't quite sure what to make of him other then he seemed to be just slightly embarassed that his Duskull had stumbled upon them. Unfortunately, before she could speak... |

"What the hell is that thing?!" Obviously, she hadn't been scared. In fact, she had been anticipating an event like this all day, and it was much to her surprise, and much needed amusement, that this was happening. Instantly her temper was on the rise, and she began fingering the pokeball that was resting in her jeans pocket. "...and who the hell are you?!" she yelled at the man against the tree. What a lovely first impression, no? What happened next would be solely up to Palia or the man. Either way, if someone didn't intervene, there was about to be a whole lot of ugly unleashed on the poor little ghost. And by ugly I mean a biting and kicking and lots of blood...not nessecarily in that order. |

"What the hell is that thing?! ...And who the hell are you?!" I winced at the girls' raised voices. They were loud. How should I explain this...? "My name is Acerbus Angerona. This is my companion, Averna." I paused. "She is a Duskull. I... apologise on her behalf if she has offended you. We mean no harm." Averna decided to accentuate my statement by tumbling sideways through the air and making her eye roll around comically. "Dussususususkull!" "She... says hello." |

"We mean no harm." Awww, Acerbus is always such a spoilsport. He needs to be more outgoing. Ah, well.... At least I got him talking to them, eh? Ma will be proud. I decided to break the ice with a bit of silliness. It wouldn't do if the girls didn't believe him; he might be discouraged from further attempts to get to know people. "Dussususususkull!" Hee... now I'm rather dizzy, but it's worth it. I don't get a chance to do that trick often. "She... says hello." Something like that, anyway. *shrug* Don't you mentally shrug at me, young man! ... I swear I'm going to have to revoke his ellipsis license someday. He uses them way too much. Edited by Averna, Jun 16 2009, 06:41:26 PM.

((Karas' part is so short, I'm not even going to bother posting as her)) "Whatever, just...just don't do that again." Karas replied, walking into the overgrowth, out of view. Apparently she was feeling very pugnacious, and the fact that the man seemed harmless, albeit freakish, didn't help to alleviate her desire for war. Anyway... *** Scrambling to her feet she greeted the man with a smile, a somewhat faked one considering she was still a little apprehensive about the whole ordeal. "Hiya~ I'm Palia Erinev...and well--" she paused to glance toward the bushes Karas disappeared through, "I'm sorry about her, she's my sister Karas. I'm sure you found her actions very rude." she emphasized the last part so Karas could hear, glancing toward the bushes and yelling. "Anyway, what brings you around here?" she finished in a cordial manner. She was oddly happy for someone who had just been spooked... All the while she was adjusting her skirt, a pink one that rested just above her knees with bold black zigzags as trim along the bottom. She also had a white tee smudged with dirt and stuff of the like, but she didn't fool around with it much. ((Wow, I feel like my posts are too short .-.)) Edited by Palia, Jun 17 2009, 08:39:10 AM.

"Anyway, what brings you around here?" That is a good question.... Averna, whWe were on a walk! Oh. Okay. "We were on a walk." I noticed Averna smacking herself in the mask with one hand analogue. I wonder why.... Spoiler: click to toggle My vision swam suddenly. I squeezed my eyes shut to fight the accompanying wave of dizziness. "Averna, I..." I did not have to finish my sentence, because the next thing I knew, Averna was back, and the dizziness was fading. I was still mostly in control, but it was easier to stand. I took a long sip from my canteen. The smell did not bother me, and the taste did not matter. I am going to have to borrow Mors -- Mother's Dusknoir -- tonight while Averna hunts. Thank you. No problem, kid. *smile* I turned my attention back to Palia. "I... what were we talking about, again?" ((I put the graphic under a spoiler tag because watching it too long made me start feeling sick.)) Edited by Pig_catapult, Jun 21 2009, 10:00:31 PM.

"A walk? Is that all? Seems like a pretty random place to go for a walk..." Palia murmured, just loud enough that Acerbus might have caught it. There was something really weird about him, she thought. Over and over again she kept questioning whether she should continue the conversation or not, if this skeleton man was really worth all the weridness. She really didn't have time for idle chat either. It wasn't long after pondering these things that an awkward silence began to pervade their meeting. Looking at Acerbus she could tell something was wrong. His eyes were shut and he seemed disoriented. The sight only lasted a few seconds, but it was quite unnerving, and Palia had to just stare at him for a moment to even begin to imagine what had happened. Of course, she didn't actually figure it out... *** "I... what were we talking about, again?" *** She snapped out of her daze. "Uh, you were telling me about your walk or something." Suddenly, Palia wished Karas would come back. She wasn't sure how far away her sister had meandered off, and things kept becoming more bizarre by the second. |

Karas wasn't about to come back anytime soon, however. In fact, if Palia thought what she was experiencing was bizarre, then Karas was in for the time of her life, in a creepy and horrific sort of way, that is. As she kicked and pulled at tangled vines and large jungle leaves, she walked deeper into the forest, and into another clearing. It appeared to be a clearing anyway. The floor and trees were covered with thick vines. The roots of the trees appeared to be dug up and exposed, with fresh sap still seeping from the tips like an IV drip. Karas sat upon a rather large rock situated under one the trees. The tree was dead, and its twisted and bent branches were black and damp. Upon further examining though, which is something Karas neglected to do on most occasions of her life, she could see that a grotesque residue was present on the tree, and that with a swipe of her finger along the slimy bark, that it had the texture of a sticky saliva. Suddenly alert, she made the once in a lifetime conclusion that she wasn't in a clearing at all. She was in a nest. She soon found out what kind too, as she heard a scraping noise ring out from behind her. Something was on the other side of the tree, gnawing and clawing at the roots. Not thinking about any possible repercussions her investigation might lead too, she stood up and walked around the tree, keeping ahold of the bark despite its texture. She couldn't see anything at first but two minuscule mushrooms, orange with white polkadots and white stalks. Then as the figure hunched over the roots looked up, she could see it was a single Paras, its body covered with the vines that were scattered on the floor. The Paras made a clicking sound with its teeth and scrambled away from the root as it noticed her, and disappeared into a burrow underneath the tree. Karas was left to herself once more. Or she thought so, once again being mistaken due to her thoughtless behavior. In a matter of seconds, a light rumbling was heard beneath the same tree, and the Paras returned, scampering to face Karas. "Heh, I bet it's scared of me..." she thought aloud. The Paras just looked at her, blinking with it's large bulbous eyes. Then another Paras appeared, this one also coated in vines. It came quite silently from the burrow and joined its friend in staring Karas down. Then another, and another, and another one popped out of the burrow. Soon there was a small army of Paras standing in front of her, all of them blinking in unison. "Uh...what the--" she didn't have time to finish the thought. The 'leader' Paras stepped forward and clicked its teeth at her. When Karas didn't respond it shook its shrooms and released a Stun Spore that flew out and tickled Karas' clothes. In seconds she could feel the dust paralyzing her limbs. She fell to the floor with dull thump. "Help..." she tried to scream, although the paralysis prevented much from escaping. The Paras' didn't stop there though. One by one they arranged themselves around her, and began to lift on her limp and dieing body. They shuffled their spindly legs and begin to carry her across the nest and through the undergrowth and foliage. With sounds inaudible to anyone but jungle life and Karas herself, she found herself being spirited away through the forest, a hostage to these strange creatures. ((I thought I'd spice things up. JUNGLE SAFARI ANYONE?)) |

"Uh, you were telling me about your walk or something." Ah, yes, our walk. My glowing red eye shone out from behind Acerbus's left as I spoke through him. "Well, we just moved into the area recently, and Ma asked me to take Acerbus out to get familiar with the area, since he doesn't care enough about things to do it himself." I paused, suddenly remembering that whole thing where most humans don't consider Ghost-type possession normal. I held out Acerbus's hand in an offer to shake hers. "Um, I'm Averna, by the way. I'm Acerbus's nurse. It's nice to meet you." Are you doing that "smiling" thing with my face again? It hurts. That just means you haven't been practicing enough. Why would I practice if it hurts? Becau-- uh-oh... ? I looked around. That Karas kid still wasn't anywhere in sight, and there was a wave of fear coming from the direction she'd vanished off towards. It wasn't even the tasty kind, either; this fear was too sweet, and left a nasty aftertaste. I stared in that direction for a long moment, speechless, before I remembered how to work Acerbus's vocal cords. "S-someone's... I-I think someone's dying over there...." I dashed off past Palia, towards the taste of fear. Acerbus's musculature might be laughable, but that fear was strong enough that I could temporarily compensate for that. The fact that his legs are pretty long meant that I can move him pretty fast in these situations, too. W-wait, why are we running towards the dying person? Because saving them is the right thing to do, and it's bound to be exciting! |

'Wait..did he just introduce himself as Averna?' she thought, as she took Acerbus' hand and shook it. It felt awkward, bony and thin. "Uhm, so are you like, possessing him then?" she asked, curious as was to be expected. It wasn't really frightening, just bizzare, like many things that had been happening recently. *** "S-someone's... I-I think someone's dying over there...." *** And off he ran. It took a minute for it to register in her head, but when it did her mouth hung open. Hadn't that been the direction Karas wandering off in? Instantly she was behind Acerbus...or Averna, she wasn't really sure anymore. She turned up every rock, examined every leaf with utmost scrutiny. Not a trace could be found, nothing marked her sisters whereabouts. "Do you think it's my sister?" she inquired, obviously concerned and full of fear. Afterall, the two of them were pretty inseperable, and sure, they had chased off monstrosities together, but apart, they were almost useless (well, Karas anyway). "...do you think she'll be alright?" [Retroactive] "Uhm, so are you like, possessing him then?" "Yeah, pretty much. We trade off a lot, though. You can tell when it's him because he sounds real boring and monotonous." [/Retroactive] I heard Palia chasing after us. She is fast. I really hope that Averna knows what she is doing. I can hear you, you know. That was my point, really. Now, see, how come you never snark like this out lou"Do you think it's my sister?" "It could be," Averna said through me, dropping the subject of our mental argument to address Palia. "I really hope not, though." "...do you think she'll be alright?" "That would depend on many variables," I spoke up. "Even if we do arrive promptly, without knowing whaOh, you've got to be kidding me! I know that this place is supposed to be 'the Island of Death' and all, but that fungus isn't even supposed to exist in this dimension! ... I have no idea what Averna is talking about, either, if that helps." ((I'm making this up as I go along, but if you don't want the vines that are (as far as I can tell) controlling a Paras hivemind to be from the Shadow Plane, let me know, and I'll get rid of the "but that fungus isn't even supposed to exist in this dimension" part ASAP. Do you have any particular plans for this jungle adventure?)) |
